New course for Housing Industry Supervisors

By Susan Robinson

There are constant changes in the building industry and it is a real challenge to keep on top of things. To be the best in the business you need to be up to date with requirements for construction work and have the practical skills to ensure compliance.

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) and the WorkSafe Victorian Volume Builders Safety Alliance have developed a health and safety training course designed to assist anyone supervising housing construction work to maintain a safe site. This course is a professional development program designed to provide anyone supervising construction work with a solid education on how to translate OH&S obligations in to action in a practical and effective manner to ensure all persons on site carry out work safely.

This course offers much more than a Red Card and participants will learn how to: • Determine areas of potential risk in the building and construction workplace

• Inspect and report on areas of specific risk

• Advise on implementation of control measures at the building and construction workplace

• Establish and review communications and educational programs

• Understand basic OH&S concepts, legal requirements and the obligations of all parties involved on domestic construction, including subcontractors, suppliers and other parties

• Apply knowledge to select the right subcontractors, provide effective supervision and ongoing checks to ensure trades and other workers carry out construction work in a safe manner.

• Apply effective communication and consultation strategies to ensure safety is addressed.

This is a two day course and at completion, participants receive a statement of attainment for a nationally accredited Certificate IV unit of competency – Manage occupational health and safety in the building and construction workplace. Details for this course are available through the HIA Training Services.
