By Susan Robinson

On 12 June 2009, Energy and Resources Minster, Peter Bachelor, launched the new safety guidelines developed to save the lives of Victorians and to prevent damage to essential underground services.

New Dial Before You Dig Services Guidelines are endorsed by Energy Safe Victoria and WorkSafe Victoria, they are designed to assist excavators to make informed decisions before they begin to dig and reduce the risk of injury, damage or disruption to services.

The guidelines detail the responsibilities of people and companies planning to dig including excavators, planners and engineers. The responsibilities of asset owners, including gas, electricity and water companies are also listed. Other information includes details about the services Dial Before You Dig provides.

Dial Before You Dig is a free service and is available to professional contractors, underground asset owners and people undertaking excavation works. The information provided by the service is designed to assist safe and secure excavation.
