Making Bowens Better

Every day I look for ways to make Bowens better. What we stock, how we buy, our relationships across all mediums – customers, staff and suppliers – our services, our capacity to live our values and my favourite, doing the basics exceptionally well. We score ourselves in a variety of ways and I am fascinated with how external industry players rate our performance. Recently, when my brother flicked me a report exploring the evolving landscape of the UK Trade Merchant sector and a strategic model for their future, I was all in. He included a comment in his email, “This made me feel good about our position and direction in market.” I liked his confidence. Let us see if his judgement can be justified.

The report’s objectives were threefold:

To analyse the macro trends and day-to-day challenges shaping the trade customer experience.
To identify the key opportunities for merchants to add value and differentiate in a competitive market.
To provide a practical framework, built around 7 core pillars to guide merchants, suppliers and industry stakeholders in adapting their operations to meet both current and future demands.

The author of the document was the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF), the UK’s leading trade association for the building materials distribution sector, representing over 1,000 merchant and supplier companies who together account for more than £52 billion of annual sales.

The Builders’ Merchant Branch of the Future (October 2025) sets out a clear argument: “the future for merchants is already here, shaped by rising customer expectations, digital disruption, operational pressure and the growing importance of sustainability and trust”. Against this framework, I’d like to think Bowens’ recent years have demonstrated a business less focussed on defending against change, but rather, one predicting different and deftly moving before it has been necessary.

As it has always been, convenience remains the defining battleground for customer loyalty. A tradesman’s time is his/her most valuable resource. Bowens’ operational focus is closely aligned with this principle. We strive to be dependable, efficient with yard designs and reliable in every way – deliveries, speed of service, with a place for everything and everything in its place.

Wherever possible, we have prioritised removing friction from our core processes, making it easier for customers to get what they need, when they need it, without surprises. More stores, improved layouts, access to a network rather than a single site, same day deliveries, a world-standard eComm offer … we can be relied upon.

The report is clear about product range. Breadth, depth, relevance, availability, quality and consistency. I firmly believe Bowens has greatly strengthened its credentials in this regard. For 30+ years, our deep focus has been on core building materials, particularly timber and necessary trade hardware. We do not stock plants, hard garden tools or outdoor furniture. We don’t sell kitchens, tiles, aged care assistance apparatus or pet food. Our stores are not the place to shop for bbq’s, outdoor heaters, carpet or children’s climbing equipment. We exist to have the products required by builders and the carpentry trade. Our investment in creating bigger facilities has been necessary to given us the opportunity to expand core ranges and, hopefully, satisfy the requirements of building professionals. We can’t get ahead of ourselves or think we are too important. What we are expected to carry needs to be in stock, always.

Importantly, we have been willing to evolve our range in line with regulatory change, system-based construction and modern building practices. Problem-solving through product innovation and stocking the right products has been a high priority. For those who have been with us over the journey, I hope you agree. We have changed; for the better.

Another strong theme of the report is the shift from transactional supplier to trusted advisor. Every business will suggest their customer service is a differentiator. Rather than boasting the same, my preference is to be excessively humble. While we would like to think our branch teams are valued not just for processing orders, but for their depth of product knowledge and practical understanding of how materials are used on site, we are aware one poor interaction won’t be forgotten. We have some gnarly older men and women who know products and systems backwards, we also have many inexperienced and energetic young kids who have only just started their first ever five-day role. My job, our job, is to blend the old and new and ensure what customers expect is delivered, every day.

From adjusting building regulations to new products and those that have existed forever, we need a team who can deliver the right answers without delay. Bowens’ ability to guide customers through specification-driven decisions, compliance requirements and material selection aligns with the report’s assertions on service, yet we will always be a ‘work in progress’. One-on-one relationships are critical and your writer needs to lead from the front.

The report challenges the industry’s legacy of “opaque pricing and inconsistent discounting”, arguing instead for clarity, fairness and modernised systems. Put more simply, product pricing is a hygiene factor; it cannot be ignored. One of our jobs is to drive prices lower, a difficult reality through long periods of inflation. Despite the challenge, if we are to be a true partner, we need to work hard to bring building costs down.

Although the report places strong emphasis on digital payment innovation, its underlying message is about trust. I would hope our customers agree with my assertion, Bowens’ credibility in this area stems from consistency rather than complexity. As payment and credit tools continue to modernise, we have been more than keeping pace. Online account payments were introduced several years ago and we have seen a strong uptake. Just one of the advantages our customers receive with their access to the Bowens portal.

Health and safety are framed not merely as compliance requirements, but as indicators of professionalism and care. Bowens’ operational environment reflects this mindset. Safe yards, disciplined processes, with clear expectations for staff and customers, signalling a business that takes its responsibility seriously.

The report argues future loyalty will be emotional as much as transactional, built through recognition, understanding and relevance, rather than discounting (alone). This one, I love. Bowens’ relationship-led approach has been in place for decades and fits naturally within this framework. Dozens of internal and external account managers and a constant push for all of our team to be industry leaders in their approach to customers. No doubt we have gaps, our job is to fill them – every day. While we will use technology to assist, our absolute focus is on people-to-people interaction. We need to do everything we can for our customers; relationships won’t work long term if respect isn’t earned or given. In this industry, business is personal.

Sustainability is positioned in the report as a strategic necessity, rather than a choice. Bowens’ engagement with responsible sourcing, compliance-led materials and supplier accountability demonstrates alignment with this approach. Again, we are on a journey. Our first year of ESG reporting is uncovering opportunities, as well as risks.

Viewed through the lens of the Builders’ Merchant Branch of the Future, I agree with Andy (my brother), Bowens has already made many positive gains. From range discipline to staffing expertise, safety, relationship-led loyalty, the digital world and innovation, I believe we have created reasons to be proud. That said, nothing stays the same, and if we are not finding ways to be better, we will become irrelevant very quickly.
