Celebrating 64 Years at Bowens

For most, a career spanning six decades is unimaginable. But for Jeff Harvey, it’s simply a way of life. Last month, the 80-year-old timber specialist, celebrated an extraordinary 64 years with family-owned business, Bowens, marking a legacy that stretches across generations.

Jeff’s wisdom, experience, and passion for timber make him an irreplaceable asset to the company. His story was celebrated and shared on 9News by Jo Hall. Take a read of Jeff’s accomplishments.

Timber in the Blood

Jeff’s journey with Bowens began at just 16 years old as a cadet. Over the years, he’s immersed himself in the world of timber, becoming a trusted expert for builders, trades, and even his own family.

“After a while, timber gets in your blood,” Jeff says. “You get to know it, understand it, and love it.”

It’s a passion that runs deep in the Harvey family. Jeff’s son has been with Bowens for 37 years, and now his granddaughter is learning the ropes under his guidance.

“I try and teach her a few things about our timber,” Jeff says.

A Mentor and a Mate

For the past nine years, Jeff has worked closely with Frank Di Stefano, who has benefited from his expertise.

“If you’re talking to Jeff, you’ll end up talking about timber,” Frank says. “He’ll share stories about how it should be used properly, best practices, and always reminds us to give it a good coat of oil.”

Jeff’s knowledge extends beyond the walls of Bowens. He has played a key role in heritage projects like the St Kilda Pier and Queen Victoria Market, often advising builders when things don’t go to plan.

“Nine times out of ten, it’s not the problem with the timber,” he says.

A Career, Love and Legacy

Jeff’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Former workmate and now Bowens chairman, Jack Bowen, recognised Jeff’s value long ago. “I remember over ten years ago, I told Jeff, ‘You can work for this company as long as you like.’”

Yet Jeff’s story at Bowens isn’t just about work—it’s where he met his wife, Marilyn. They’ve been married for 57 years.

“This’ll be our 57th year,” Jeff says proudly. A union built on shared values and, of course, a love for timber.

Even though Jeff now works part-time, his presence is as strong as ever.

“He’s very knowledgeable,” says Frank. “Anytime we have a question, we ask Jeff—and he shares his wisdom.”

So, what’s next for a man who has dedicated 64 years to the same company? Jeff has a simple answer.

“Well, I reckon I’ve got a couple of useful years left in me.”

With a legacy like Jeff’s, it’s safe to say he’ll be leaving an impact for years to come. But for now, he’s still doing what he loves—surrounded by timber, sharing knowledge, and proving that passion never fades.
