Large Timber Sections and Specials For Sale

Bowens Timber

Regular readers of the Bulletin will recall that in the June publication, I promoted our new branch in Cheltenham as the centre for significant timber offerings within the Bowens network.

Just to clarify, when I refer to “big timbers,” I’m generally talking about those typically crafted from robust Australian hardwoods in significant dimensions, taking the following forms:

Unseasoned Sound Heart

These are primarily required to meet relatively high structural stress ratings such as F11, F14, F17, and F22. They are usually suitable for external applications.

Reclaimed

This timber is salvaged from old forestry logs or fallen trees, often found in semi-seasoned condition. It’s generally suitable for both external and, in some cases, internal use.

Recycled

Usually sourced from old structures like buildings, warehouses, bridges, and wharves, these timbers are often over a century old. They’re the only way to classify large-section timbers as seasoned. Additionally, this timber was originally milled from very mature oldgrowth trees. Keep in mind that as timber dries, it becomes stronger, potentially achieving strength ratings of F27 or even F34, especially when recycled. These timbers are used internally for stability and appearance, as well as externally when a very high-stress rating is necessary.

Customers who have recently visited Cheltenham may have noticed a trolley of reclaimed large-section posts. We’ve had these posts on display at various branches for the past three years, and we believe it’s time to offer these timbers for sale to further highlight Cheltenham and Bowens as specialists in large-section timbers.

We’ve significantly reduced the prices for these timbers currently on display at Cheltenham:

• 240×240 Reclaimed Ironbark DAR: 2/2.7, 2/3.5, 2/3.9 @ $320 per linear meter, including the above.
• 215×215 Reclaimed Ironbark DAR: 2/2.7, 1/2.6 @ $199 per linear meter, including GST.
• 190×190 Reclaimed Tallowwood DAR: 1/4.1 @ $155 per linear meter, including GST.

Please note that most of these lengths are suitable only when affixed to a metal stirrup, which our Cheltenham branch has in stock.

Another special offering is:

• 240×90 Free of Heart Center Spotted Gum DAR: 5/3.9, 4/2.7 @ $77 per linear meter, including GST.

This timber has been stored at our Port Melbourne store. It’s a cancelled order that has been sheltered for approximately three years. Rest assured, the quality is impeccable.

Lastly, we have a truly unique product that may pique the interest of some readers:

• 4 Ironbark Trusses: The top and bottom chords are both 200×200 Ironbark.
• Ancillary timbers associated with the trusses.
• All the components have been precisely cut and are ready for installation.

Despite being crafted to the original specifications (unseasoned), the trusses were rejected when some minor expected cracking appeared.
