Improving Workplace Occupational Health and Safety

Every year, WorkSafe helps hundreds of small and medium Victorian businesses through the OHS Essentials program to develop a practical plan to improve workplace safety.           

The program provides independent advice on occupational health and safety to Victorian businesses. It involves your business being paired up with an independent consultant who will work with you and provide practical, tailored safety advice and confidential recommendations to improve workplace safety.

To be eligible for the program, you must be a small or medium size business (up to 60 workers) and have a WorkCover insurance policy. The program consists of three sessions with an independent consultant. The initial visit will be where the consultant will get a full understanding of your current health and safety systems. The remaining sessions will focus on addressing the key priority safety topics selected in your application.

David Woodlands runs a small construction and commercial maintenance business in Victoria. He completed the OHS Essentials program as he wanted to prevent ongoing repetitive injuries that his employees face in the industry. He was paired up with an independent consultant to help manage risks on site and helped build up a library of Occupational Health and Safety material to use in the future.

David’s advice to anyone who is interested in completing the program is that “What’s great about the OHS Essentials program is knowing that you have done everything you could to keep your employees safe.”
