Scaffolding Safety
Are You Across the Latest Industry Standard?
If you’re working with scaffolding—or managing people who are—it’s time to check if you’ve got the most up-to-date guidance. The Scaffolding Industry Standard was updated in December 2024, and it includes a number of important changes to help reduce risk and improve safety on-site.
This standard is aimed at anyone involved in the design, setup, use, inspection, dismantling or maintenance of scaffolding. Whether you’re a builder, supervisor, scaffold contractor, or site manager, this is a document worth having on hand.
What’s changed?
There are several key changes to be aware of:
- Safer erection and dismantling methods are now recommended. Techniques like the one-metre lift method or advanced guardrail systems should be used instead of the older ‘sequential erection’ method
- The standard now states that anti-tamper devices are considered reasonably practicable, meaning they should be used to help prevent unauthorised adjustments
- A new step height requirement has been introduced. When using a two-metre stair module, the maximum step height to the working platform must be reduced to 300mm. (Previously, it was up to 500mm.) This change comes into effect from December 2025, so plan ahead
- Toe boards are required on hanging bracket scaffolds to prevent tools or materials from falling
- The guide also includes new advice for lifting scaffolds by crane, helping crews do this task more safely.
Why Scaffolding Safety Matters
Scaffolding is a high-risk activity. These updates are based on industry consultation and aim to make scaffolding work safer and more consistent across the board. Having the latest information can help prevent injuries—and keep your site compliant.
The Industry Standard is available as a downloadable PDF, making it easy to keep a copy on your phone or tablet for quick reference on site.
