Crafted Hardwoods: A Homegrown Timber Innovation
Turning Underused Timber into Building Materials
Anyone sourcing timber knows quality material can be hard to find, especially when project timelines and supply pressures don’t wait.
In Australia, large volumes of timber are harvested every year, but much of it is juvenile, lower-grade material that never becomes finished building products — instead it is often chipped, exported, or downcycled into lower-value uses.
Crafted Hardwoods takes a different approach, upcycling this overlooked resource into architectural-grade timbers ready for real projects.
In an industry shaped by supply pressure and changing expectations, this approach offers a practical answer to a familiar problem. The focus is on local manufacturing, making fuller use of available timber resources, and delivering durable, healthy products suited to long-term use.
Bowens customers can now access Crafted Hardwoods products across key architectural timber categories, including:
- Internal linings
- Cladding
- Pencil-round battens
For projects prioritising responsible materials, indoor air quality, and long-term durability, the range offers a compelling hardwood option.
In addition to these products, custom requirements can also be supported through Bowens’ Special Buy In service where required.

Natural timber, engineered efficiency
Crafted Hardwoods’ timbers are made from natural wood veneers responsibly sourced from lower-grade, under-utilised resources. These veneers are bonded under heat and pressure using a unique proprietary process that transforms them into high-strength architectural material.
The result is a material that retains the character of natural timber while delivering the efficiency and performance enabled by advanced manufacturing.
While engineered, the material is not a laminate or composite and can be sanded, refinished, and repaired over time like traditional timber.
Timber species available
Crafted Hardwoods products are available in a range of native species including Blackbutt, NSW Spotted Gum, Tasmanian Oak and White Gum. Together these species provide a broad palette of natural tones, with the flexibility to align with existing joinery or other timber elements through finishing options where required.
The species selection also reflects a focus on responsibly sourced timber, with all species sourced through FSC® or PEFC certified supply chains.

Interior and exterior applications
All Crafted Hardwoods species are suitable for interior use, making them well-suited to living spaces, workplaces, and commercial environments. Manufactured without added formaldehyde, the material supports indoor applications where air quality matters, while retaining the natural characteristics of real timber.
For exterior applications, suitability depends on the species selected. Blackbutt and NSW Spotted Gum offer strong natural durability and resistance to termites, making them appropriate for exposed conditions and bushfire-prone areas, with options meeting BAL 29 requirements. As with any external timber, correct detailing, protective coatings, and ongoing maintenance are essential to long-term performance.

Practical advantages on site
On site, the benefits of Crafted Hardwoods are practical. The material behaves like traditional hardwood, but with greater straightness and stability, making installation easier while remaining familiar to handle.
Cladding and lining products are also end-matched to reduce waste and streamline installation.
Choose the character to suit your project
Crafted Hardwoods’ products are available in two grain options, allowing clients to select the aesthetic that best suits the style of their project.
- Backsawn provides a more expressive, character-rich appearance, while
- Quartersawn offers a linear, more uniform look.
For batten applications, the selected grain option is expressed on the wider face, with the narrow edge presenting the alternate grain pattern.

Innovation through resourcefulness
Sometimes innovation in building doesn’t mean changing materials — it means changing how those materials are made.
By combining local manufacturing with certified supply chains and an upcycling approach to under-utilised timber, Crafted Hardwoods sits within that shift, showing how overlooked resources can become valuable building materials.
It suggests that the next chapter for timber may be shaped less by how much we harvest and more by how well we use what we already have.
