A Guide to Restoring Merbau Decking

A Guide to Restoring Merbau Decking

Merbau is an imported hardwood timber known for its durability and natural resistance to decay and termites. It’s a popular decking selection due to its rich colour and affordability. Yet, over time, exposure to the weather and UV rays can take a toll on the appearance and structural integrity of the timber.

In this blog, we’ll describe the steps required to restoring Merbau decking and enhancing your outdoor space.

  • Step 1: Check Your Merbau Deck for Damage

Before you start the restoration process, check your Merbau deck for signs of damage or wear. Look for loose boards, nails or screws that need tightening. Also, check for splinters, cracks or decay in the timber, but be aware that the damage can be more widespread than what is apparent on the surface.

Issues with subfloor ventilation, moisture and water drainage, inadequate decking board spacing, the use of incorrect nails and lack of deck maintenance can result in substantial decking damage. You’ll need to resolve any issues and replace damaged decking boards before continuing the restoration process.

  • Step 2: Clean Your Deck

When restoring Merbau decking, you must clean it thoroughly before sanding to remove dirt, grime, mildew or mould. Use a deck cleaner specifically designed for hardwood decking and scrub the deck surface with a stiff brush in the direction of the timber grain. Rinse the deck thoroughly with a garden hose or a pressure water cleaner set on low.

  • Step 3: Sand Your Merbau Decking

Once your deck is clean, your Merbau decking may have rough, weathered areas or stains. Sanding will ensure a clean, smooth surface, ready for staining or oiling.

Using a belt sander, hand sander or sanding sponge, work in the direction of the timber grain. Take your time to ensure that the deck is smooth. Once you are happy with it, clean the dust and debris off the deck.

Note: Ensure you use appropriate personal protective equipment during this step.

  • Step 4: Apply Oil or Stain to the Decking

The final step is to protect and enhance your Merbau decking. You can either stain or oil your deck, depending on the finish you require. Both options will protect your deck, however, a stain will enhance the colour and an oil will offer a natural finish.

The Advantages of Timber Decking Stains

  • Seals the deck with a film or coating for protection from the elements and foot traffic
  • Reduces UV exposure and the effects of UV rays
  • Stains offer great colour coverage
  • Dries quickly, for an efficient job
  • Provides a waterproof finish.

The Advantages of Timber Decking Oils

  • Penetrate deep into the timber for lasting protection
  • Water, mould and dirt resistance
  • Reduces the impact of UV rays
  • Excellent coverage
  • Restores the timbers natural oils
  • Help to prevent cracking and warping.

Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a professional finish.
