At Bowens, we see ourselves as true timber environmental suppliers.

Recently, we were appointed the Victorian distributors for Hydrowood — a company that reclaims submerged hardwood trees from a lake in northern Tasmania. These salvaged trees were flooded around 39 years ago, and the cold water has preserved them remarkably well, allowing the timber to be used once they have been harvested from the water.

So, it wasn’t a surprise when our supplier, Australian Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH), approached us to see if we were interested in marketing products made from low-grade trees harvested in Tasmania. In the past, these logs were typically exported or used for pallets, but ASH is now adding value to this resource by producing attractively priced Tasmanian Oak under the “Classic Grade” range.

What is Classic Grade Tasmanian Oak?

Classic Grade is a celebration of natural features, which can include gum veins, gum pockets, knots and surface checks that showcase the character of the tree. It’s a “feature and better” grade offering the beauty of Tasmanian Oak with a little more life and story in every board.

Depending on your taste, some may find this grade very appealing, easy to work with and extremely cost-effective. Classic Grade cladding delivers the ideal balance between appearance and value for money.

Treated Shiplap in Classic Grade

Bowens is now stocking 105x19mm Tasmanian Oak Cladding with a Shiplap profile in the new Classic Grade. It is H3 treated and end-matched for ease of installation.

It is available in random lengths from 0.9 to 5.4 metres, with an average length of 3 metres. Although not available in set lengths, the end matching keeps waste to a minimum. Other profiles available in Classic grade include external finger-jointed battens and internal lining boards.

Most of our stores feature a small sample display panel of these products. However, I should note that the panel may present an enhanced example of the timber’s quality. As mentioned above, any supply may include the typical characteristics of this grade, such as gum veins, gum pockets, knots, and surface checks, for which we make no apology. These features are inherent to this grade of timber and are reflected in the pricing.
