Composite Decking Care: How to Clean and Maintain Your Deck
How to Clean and Maintain Composite Decking
Composite decking is a popular choice for outdoor areas due to its durability and low-maintenance finish. However, to keep your composite deck looking great and extend its lifespan, you must clean it regularly.
In this blog, we’ll discuss the best way to clean and maintain your composite decking.
Step 1: Cleaning Supplies
Before you begin, gather all your cleaning supplies. You’ll need a soft-bristle brush, a composite deck cleaner or mild detergent, water, a hose, a sponge and a bucket.
Step 2: Clear the Deck of Objects
Remove furniture, plants and BBQs from the deck. This will give you access to the entire deck without having to clean around furniture.
Step 3: Sweep the Deck
Use a soft-bristle broom or leaf blower to sweep off any loose dirt, leaves or debris from the deck. You must have a clean surface to effectively clean your deck.
Step 4: Prepare the Cleaning Solution
Pour either a mild detergent or composite deck cleaner into your bucket. Fill your bucket with water and ensure the detergent and water are mixed.
Note: Follow the ratio on the deck cleaner to ensure you have the correct solution.
Step 5: Apply the Cleaning Solution
Dip your soft-bristle brush in the cleaning solution and gently scrub the composite decking boards. Pay extra attention to visible stains or mildew growth. You can use your soft sponge here to lift off dirt from hard-to-reach areas or stubborn stains.
Step 6: Rinse the Composite Decking Thoroughly
After scrubbing, thoroughly rinse the deck with clean water. You can use a garden hose, or a pressure washer to remove the cleaning solution. Note: If you use a pressure washer, ensure it is set to a low setting with a fan-tipped nozzle. The nozzle should be more than 30cm from the deck surface when sprayed to avoid damaging the composite decking.
Step 7: Regular Maintenance
Aim to clean your composite decking at least twice a year, preferably at the beginning and end of a season. Regular cleaning of your composite decking is the key to a like-new deck for many years to come.
Step 8: Protect Your Composite Decking
To maintain your composite decking’s longevity, consider using protective mats to prevent scratches. Also, avoid dragging heavy objects or furniture across the deck to prevent damage.
Top Tips to Maintain a Clean Deck All Year Round

Simple Cleaning Routine
Weekly sweeping is essential to prevent the build-up of dirt, debris, and potential mould and mildew growth. Don’t forget to sweep under pots or furniture.
In addition, gently scrubbing your deck with detergent and water a few times a year is essential to keep it looking new.
Clean Up Spills Quickly
Food spills are common on outdoor decks, especially oil and sunscreen stains. Quick action is key to preventing stains and potential damage. We recommend using BBQ mats, rugs and plant stands for extra protection.
Selecting the Right Cleaning Products
Using a mild soap, sugar soap or composite decking-specific cleaners is recommended as they offer a gentle formula that will not damage the decking surface. Brushes must have soft bristles and be used in the direction of the grain to prevent scratching the decking.
Why Maintain Your Composite Decking?
By setting up a simple cleaning routine, clean up spills quickly, choosing the right cleaning products and maintaining a cleaning schedule, you’ll ensure that your composite deck looks like new for years to come.
