Coastal areas: In coastal suburbs, salt air and sea spray can significantly speed up the corrosion of door furniture. This can lead to rust, staining, and eventual failure of the door hardware mechanisms. In these environments, marine-grade stainless steel or solid brass is encouraged, as they provide better resistance against the elements

Bushfire-prone areas: In bushfire-prone areas, door hardware must meet the relevant BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) requirements and withstand high temperatures. Door hardware in these areas needs to be BAL-certified to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. BAL-certified door hardware will be clearly labelled.

Fixing systems and mechanisms

Door hardware can come in face-fixed and through-bolt fixing methods.

Through-bolt fixing: This type of fixing is recommended for its durability. By fastening through the door, it provides a secure connection that resists loosening over time, particularly in high traffic areas.

Face-fixed: In contrast, face-fixed hardware, although more affordable, is prone to loosening and wear. While it may be fine for low-traffic areas, it generally doesn’t offer the same long-term durability in high-traffic areas in the home.

The Finish

The finish of door hardware affects both its appearance and its durability.

Common options include;

Matte Black, Satin Chrome, Polished Chrome, Graphite Nickel, Polished Brass, Antique Brass, Satin Brass, Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Antique Copper, Vintage Pewter, Aged Brass, Stainless Steel, powder-coated, and brass.

Each has varying resistance to scratching, fading, and corrosion. High-traffic areas require more durable finishes that can withstand constant handling. External applications demand finishes that can resist weather exposure, while indoor hardware may prioritise aesthetics.
