Tasmanian Oak vs American White Oak Timber Flooring

By: Bowens

What’s the Difference?

When selecting solid timber flooring, the range of options can feel endless. However, other than selecting the visual finish, understanding the timber’s properties and whether it’s suitable for the application is an important part of the process.

In this guide, we look at the key difference between two popular timber floorings; Tasmanian Oak and American White Oak.

Tasmania Oak Timber Flooring

Species Overview

Tasmanian Oak timber flooring is a locally sourced Australian hardwood widely used across residential construction. It’s known for its lighter appearance, consistent availability, and ease of cutting and fixing.

  • Australian hardwood species mix (Eucalyptus regnans, delegatensis, obliqua)
  • Widely used in Australian residential builds
  • Consistent local availability

Appearance & Aesthetic

  • Colour is light straw to pale brown, with occasional pink tones
  • Some natural variation between boards
  • Straight grain with clean appearance in select grades
  • Can show more tonal variation across batches

Timber Properties & Performance

  • Typical Janka rating: ~5.5–6.5 kN
  • Medium-density hardwood
  • Good impact resistance for general residential traffic
  • Slightly softer surface compared to White Oak and may mark or dent in high-traffic zones

Movement, Shrinkage & Stability

  • Moderate seasonal movement
  • Tangential shrinkage is higher than White Oak
  • Sensitive to site moisture changes
  • Requires acclimatisation
  • Expansion gaps critical, particularly with wide boards

Timber Workability

  • Easy to cut and profile
  • Sands quickly and evenly
  • Machines, and turns well, to a smooth surface
  • No difficulty using standard fittings and fastenings

Fixing & Installation

  • Generally does not require pre-drilling, except near board ends
  • Good nail and screw holding capacity
  • Lower splitting risk than denser hardwoods
  • Bonds well

American White Oak Timber Flooring

Species Overview

American White Oak timber flooring is an imported hardwood commonly specified for premium and architectural builds. It has a uniform grain, excellent staining, and strong wear resistance.

  • Imported hardwood
  • Common in premium residential and architectural specifications
  • Generally tight grading and colour consistency

Appearance & Aesthetic

  • Colour is light to mid brown with subtle pink undertones
  • Consistent colour control across batches
  • Prominent grain with natural character
  • Takes stains and finishes evenly

Timber Properties & Performance

  • Typical Janka rating: ~6.0 kN
  • Dense, durable hardwood
  • Strong wear resistance in high-traffic areas
  • Not as prone to scratches and dents as Tasmanian Oak

Movement, Shrinkage & Stability

  • Good dimensional stability
  • Lower shrinkage rates compared to many Australian hardwoods
  • Performs well in wider board formats
  • Requires acclimatisation

Timber Workability

  • Easy to machine and cut
  • Easy to screw and fix
  • Sands well but requires slightly more effort

Fixing & Installation

  • Pre-drilling recommended, especially near board ends
  • Splitting risk if fixed too close to the ends without pre-drill
  • Strong fixing hold
  • Dense structure requires full adhesive coverage
  • Tannins may react with certain low-grade adhesives (check with manufacturer)
