Insulation and its R-value

When it comes to building or renovating, insulation plays an important part in comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term savings. One of the terms you’ll come across is R-value. But what does it actually mean, and how do you use R-value to make the right decision when selecting insulation?

What is R-value?
R-value is a measure of thermal resistance. It tells you how well insulation can resist heat transfer. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation performs. Understanding R-value helps to compare products and ensure a structure stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

How is it calculated?
R-value is calculated based on the thickness of the material and its thermal conductivity. The formula measures how effectively a material slows down heat transfer. Different materials, such as fibreglass, foam, or polyester, have different insulating properties, so even at the same thickness, their R-values can vary.

Manufacturers test and label their products, making it easier to select the right option for the project. In short, materials that aren’t good at conducting heat perform better.

What R-value should I install?
The ideal R-value depends on your climate zone, the part of the building you’re insulating, and the energy report. As a general guide in Victoria, to achieve a minimum 7-star NatHERS rating, ceilings commonly require R4.0 to R6.0, while external walls are often R2.5.

Why is it important?
With the amendments to the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022, insulation in new homes and substantially sized renovations are generally higher in R-value than previously. This is due to the effectiveness of insulation and the ability to easily increase the R-value without changing the home’s design.

Insulation reduces reliance on heating and cooling systems, leading to lower energy bills and a more comfortable indoor living space.
