Plasterboard Explained: Which Type Works Where

Plasterboard Lining

Plasterboard is one of the most widely used internal lining materials across residential and commercial projects. Whether you’re building a new home, renovating, or completing a commercial fit-out, plasterboard provides a fast, clean and efficient way to achieve smooth, paint-ready walls.

But not all plasterboard is created equal. Choosing the right type for each space can make a big difference to performance and the quality of the finished job. This blog discusses the range of plasterboard lining available so you can make informed decisions onsite.

What Is Plasterboard?

Plasterboard, also known as drywall, gypsum board, gyprock or wallboard, is made from a core of gypsum plaster lined with two layers of heavy-duty paper. The gypsum core provides rigidity and fire resistance, while the paper lining creates a smooth surface ready for jointing or painting. This process makes plasterboard lighter and faster to install than traditional wet plaster, which requires longer curing times and more labour.

Benefits of Using Plasterboard

  • Fast installation: Quick to cut, fix and finish for efficient builds
  • Cost-effective: Readily available and affordable with minimal waste
  • Range of edge profiles: Square, recessed, or tapered edge, ideal for different jointing methods and finish levels
  • Readily available: A range of sheet sizes and thicknesses available for ease of use
  • Versatile finishes: Smooth, consistent surface ready for paint.

Types of Plasterboard

Standard Plasterboard
Standard plasterboard lining is an all-rounder, used for most internal walls in dry areas. It’s easy to cut, fix, and finish, making it the go-to product for general-purpose lining.

Moisture-Resistant (MR) Plasterboard
Specifically designed for wet areas like bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens. MR boards contain additives in the core and liners to resist moisture absorption and prevent mould growth.

Fire-Resistant Plasterboard
This plasterboard is formulated with glass fibres and special additives that slow heat transfer and maintain structural integrity under fire conditions. It’s essential for meeting NCC fire-rating requirements in boundary walls and commercial applications.

Acoustic or Sound-Resistant Plasterboard
These boards have a denser core to help reduce sound transmission and are ideal for reducing noise between rooms like bedrooms and theatres. Sound can be significantly reduced if used in conjunction with acoustic insulation.

Impact-Resistant Plasterboard
Reinforced to resist handle knocks and dents, this impact-resistant plasterboard is perfect for high-traffic environments such as hallways, games rooms, schools or hospitals, where durability is important.
