The Advantages of Reflective Insulation
The Advantages of Reflective Insulation
What is Reflective Insulation?
Reflective insulation (or sarking) is designed to reflect the heat and reduce radiant heat transfer in residential homes, sheds and garages. Primarily used in the roof, it can also be effective in walls, keeping the space cooler in the hot summer months.
Typically reflecting up to 95% of radiant heat to the internal space, it maximises thermal comfort whilst providing a cost-effective solution.
How Does it Work?
Unlike traditional insulation, which primarily slows conductive heat flow, reflective insulation works by reflecting heat radiation, making it effective in hot climates like Australia. The reflective insulation, in most cases, requires a 20mm – 35mm air gap to walls and 40mm sag between foil and roof cover. This gap allows the foil to reflect radiant heat more effectively, providing an additional layer of insulation to prevent heat from passing through the barrier and into the room.
What Are the Advantages of Reflective Insulation?
Reduced Energy Costs
One of the primary advantages of reflective insulation is its ability to reduce energy costs. By reflecting heat away from the home, it allows the room to stay cooler. This is especially important in sheds and garages t reduces the need for air conditioning in summer and heating in winter, resulting in lower energy bills.
Improved Comfort
Reflective insulation helps maintain a more consistent indoor temperature, reducing hot spots in summer and cold spots in winter. This leads to a more comfortable living environment all year-round.
Environmental Benefits
As reflective insulation maintains a more comfortable indoor temperature, it reduces the reliance on mechanical heating and cooling systems. This, as a result, reducing the home’s carbon footprint.
Ease of Installation
Reflective foil insulation is relatively easy to install compared to traditional insulation materials. It can be installed during construction or retrofitted into existing buildings, making it a convenient option.
Cost-Effective
While the initial cost of reflective insulation may be higher than traditional insulation, its long-term cost-effectiveness makes it a wise investment. The energy savings it provides can quickly offset the initial investment.
This type of sarking, in addition to offering many advantages for the home in a range of climates, is a must in hot or humid conditions like in Australia.
