Adhere to Manufacturers’ Installation Guidelines

Many composite cladding and fibre cement cladding systems come with strict guidelines for installation. This includes considerations for spacing, attachment methods, control joints, flashings and fasteners. If these installation guidelines are not followed the warranty, in most cases, is null and void. That’s why it is important to follow the installation guidelines carefully.

Many cladding manufacturers provide fixings and accessories to be used in conjunction with the cladding system. This not only makes the process easier, it ensures that the system meets the manufacturer’s guidelines and the Australian Standards. If a cladding system is not built to the guidelines, a building surveyor or certifier may not sign off on the works. This can be a costly issue for the builder or trade.

Check Cladding Details

Not all cladding systems will be suitable for all projects. That is why it is important to check that the details provided by the manufacturer suit the job.

Details that may affect the design or installation of the cladding include;

• Ground clearance requirements
• Slab edge details
• Window surround details
• Door opening details
• Correct product storage on site
• Allowance for expansion gaps
• Coating and maintenance requirements.

Consider Cladding Size

It reduces the airflow around the insulation making it work more effectively. Building wraps also stop moisture from seeping into the frame or insulation and damaging the internal linings.

Cladding systems should be designed to allow for ventilation and drainage to help with the removal of moisture and water accumulating behind the cladding. This can include a cavity batten for certain products. In addition, effective waterproofing, such as sealants and membranes, allows for the overall moisture resistance of the cladding system.

Wind Rating

Cladding systems need to be installed to meet local wind ratings. It is important that the selected cladding system is suitable for the wind-rating area that you are building in. This information is specified by an engineer and should be checked prior to the commencement of the cladding installation.

Meeting Australian Standards

Cladding systems need to be installed not only to meet the manufacturer’s instructions but also to meet Australian Standards. Often installation guidelines will note ‘supplied by others’ in regard to window flashing details, flashing, capping or building wrap requirements. As these materials are not part of the manufacturer’s cladding system, you need to ensure they meet Australian Standards prior to installation.
