Worker Trapped Overnight After 3.5m Fall into Piling Hole
WorkSafe is issuing a reminder that open piling holes can become life-threatening hazards in seconds
A construction worker in northern Victoria was attempting to cover a piling hole approximately 450mm wide when they fell around 3.5 metres into the hole. The worker remained trapped overnight before being rescued.
Why piling holes are so dangerous
Piling is commonly used to create deep foundations for buildings and structures, as well as earth retention systems. Bored pile holes can extend several metres in depth and have a diameter large enough for a person to fall in.
Falling into a piling hole can result in serious injuries and create significant challenges for rescue efforts. The injuries can even be fatal.
Potential consequences can include:
- Falls-related injuries
- Engulfment
- Drowning
- Asphyxiation
- Delayed or prolonged rescue.
How to prevent falls into piling holes
Employers and self-employed persons should assess the risks associated with piling work and implement effective controls, including:
- Consider alternative types of piling methods, e.g. continuous flight auger (CFA piles) or driven displacement piles
- Use an engineered fall prevention system, like a secured pile hole cover, caisson, or guardrail system (pile hole guard with footplate); and
- Scheduling the concrete pour to occur as soon as possible after piling to minimise the time the hole is left open.
In some situations, more than one control measure may be needed to eliminate the risk of a fall.
For example, an engineered guardrail system may be installed around a piling hole before a pile hole cover is fitted or removed. Using multiple controls can help to maintain protection throughout the entire process.
Don’t overlook the risk of working alone
The recent incident highlights the risks associated with working by yourself. To better protect yourself or your workers, employers need to consider:
- Implementing a ‘buddy’ system for high-risk tasks
- Establish reliable communication systems and procedures
- Recording personnel movements through sign-in and sign-out processes.
