Why the Right Adhesive Matters 

When it comes to construction adhesives, not all products are created equal. On a job site, the wrong choice can lead to weak bonds, structural failure, or time-consuming rework. Whether you’re bonding timber to concrete, securing dry wall, or installing timber flooring, selecting the right adhesive is important to the durability and compliance of your build. 

Here’s how to choose the right construction adhesive based on key factors like material compatibility, bond strength, and cure time. 

Material & substrate compatibility 

There are a wide range of adhesives designed for specific substrates including timber, steel, concrete, fibre cement, PVC, or mixed materials. 

• Water-based adhesives work well on porous surfaces like timber and plasterboard 

• Solvent-based or polyurethane adhesives are better for non-porous materials like metals or plastics 

• MS polymer adhesives offer broad compatibility across many surfaces, making them a reliable all-rounder on-site. 

Before applying, check the substrate is clean, dry (unless the product says otherwise), and free from oil, dust, or debris. Inadequate surface prep can affect the adhesives performance. 

Bond Strength & Holding Power 

Not every construction adhesive is designed to handle structural loads. Make sure the adhesive’s tensile strength aligns with the application. 

• Structural-grade adhesives are ideal for wall panels, or external cladding where high bond strength is critical 

• General-purpose construction adhesives are better suited to lightweight, non-load-bearing applications like trims or mouldings.

Flexibility in Construction Adhesives 

Buildings expansion, contraction, vibration, and settlement all impact adhesive joints. That’s why flexibility is a must in many scenarios. 

• MS polymers and polyurethane adhesives are best when movement is expected, such as in cladding, window installs, or external joints 

• Epoxy adhesives, on the other hand, are rigid and ideal for static, high-strength connections. 

Using a flexible adhesive where movement is expected will help to prevent cracks and bond failure. 

Curing Time  

Some jobs need an adhesive that grabs fast and cures quickly, others require more time for alignment, adjustments and setting. 

• Fast-grab adhesives speed up installation and reduce the need for bracing 

• Longer open time adhesives are useful when applying to large panels or when repositioning is needed. 

Environmental conditions, especially cold or humid weather, can affect curing time, so always check if your adhesive’s cure time changes with different temperatures. 

Environmental Factors  

Where the adhesive is used matters just as much as what it’s used on. 

• Internal projects can often call for a low-VOC adhesive. This will reduce odours, lower the chances of dizziness, headaches, respiratory issues and is better for the environment 

• External applications require UV resistance and weatherproof adhesives 

• Wet areas like bathrooms or kitchens need waterproof and mould-resistant adhesives to prevent degradation over time. 

Some adhesives are specifically rated for these conditions, so check the packaging or product sheet to confirm. 

Meets Industry regulations 

Always use construction adhesives that meet industry standards for the build type, especially for commercial projects. 

• Look for NCC compliance, fire rating certifications, and low-VOC labels where required 

• Green building projects may call for GECA or Green Star approved adhesives 

• Keep TDS and SDS documents on hand for compliance and safety auditing.
