“Australia is very different to other parts of the world. It has its own aesthetic,” says Suzanne McNeice, Circa Studio Manager. “If people are looking at solid timber, there’s a strong pull for native timbers.”

Across Circa Studio, the team is seeing a clear rise in demand for native species. This aligns with a broader design movement that favours materials with a strong local identity.

“This could be that they want to buy Australian, or because the current aesthetic is very Australiana,” says Suzanne.

Digital platforms and design media continue to shape these preferences, with clients often arriving informed by what they’ve seen online.

“People are directed by the aesthetics they’re seeing on social media, online, and in magazines,” she adds.

This exposure is accelerating interest in timbers that feel distinctly Australian.

Blackbutt: Known for its pale, blonde tones, Blackbutt suits contemporary interiors and complements neutral palettes

“We always get a lot of interest in Blackbutt and Spotted Gum,” says Suzanne. “People are more interested in the NSW Spotted Gum over Queensland Spotted Gum because they want the consistency of its lighter colour and more uniform tone.”

A Shift Toward Lighter Palettes

Current interiors favour softer, more neutral timber tones, with a noticeable move away from deeper reds and heavy colour variation.

Designers are opting for timbers that support calm, minimal and light-filled interiors, making Blackbutt, Tasmanian Oak and lighter Spotted Gum variations especially popular.

Tasmanian Oak Timber Flooring on the Rise

While Tasmanian Oak has long been a staple, its relevance is set to grow as mid-century and late modern homes undergo renovation. Matching existing floorboards is becoming a key driver.

“There will be a wave of projects coming through now for 1970s and 80s renovations with Tassie Oak floors,” says Daniel Dalla Riva, Architecture and Design Specialist at Circa Studio.

He notes that suburbs with large concentrations of these homes, such as Preston and Thomastown, may see a resurgence as designers look to maintain material continuity.

“It’s yet to hit popular culture or mainstream, but it is at the forefront of interior design in Australia at the minute,” Daniel adds.

What Clients Need to Understand

For architects, designers and builders, setting clear expectations around natural variation and product performance remains essential.

“It’s a natural material, and there will be variation between planks,” Suzanne explains. “There’s never going to be a perfect and consistent flooring if you’re looking at real wood.”

She also highlights practical considerations:

Solid timber widths typically max out at 180mm
Wider boards are available but come at a premium
Raw solid timber requires sanding and coating, which influences final colour and sheen.

“We have to explain that solid timber comes in a raw finish … the coating can affect the finish and the colour.”
