We sat down with Bowens Product Innovation & Business Development Manager, Andrew Healey, to find out what’s driving this year’s innovation seminars, which products builders should be watching, and where the industry is headed.

For Bowens, it all comes back to one thing: practical, innovative solutions that make building easier, faster and more efficient while delivering better outcomes.

“What we’re trying to bring to the table is constructability,” Andrew said. “What’s going on behind the wall? How do you build this? How much faster is that to install? What efficiencies will it bring? How much stronger or safer will it be?”

Those are the questions shaping this year’s Expo, and exactly what builders can expect to explore on the day.

Trust the Product

For all the innovation on show, one thing hasn’t changed; builders want to see a product before they trust it.

“Out of any industry I’ve ever worked in, the most tactile and visual industry that I’ve come across has been the building industry,” Andrew said. “People want to touch and feel products.”

Andrew sees this every day at the Rethink Building Hub, Bowens’ year-round innovation centre, where builders, site supervisors and project managers can explore new construction methods and photograph details they’ve never used before.

“It’s the most important thing I think that we can offer. People need to come and see it in the flesh.”

That hands-on experience is exactly what makes Bowens Expo so valuable. Instead of simply hearing about new products, builders can see how they’re installed, understand how they work together, and decide whether they’ll make a difference on site.

Products to Watch

Seeing products in action also gives builders a better understanding of which innovations are genuinely changing the way homes are built. So, when asked which products will have the biggest impact over the next 12 months, Andrew didn’t hesitate.

“It has to be advancing and developing smart cavity and ventilated systems, and methodology that makes it easy to build and comply with the construction code,” he said. “We do have solutions, but I think there’s more development to be made. Advancements in that space are going to be critical over the next two years.”

Staying Ahead of Change

Innovation isn’t just about new products, it’s also about staying ahead of an industry that’s constantly evolving.

The National Construction Code (NCC) continues to change, and every update introduces new requirements that builders need to understand. That’s why Bowens focuses on solutions that not only help builders meet compliance but also improve productivity, simplify construction and reduce the number of trades required to complete a build.

“Builders need to look forward to where the code is going and start creating incremental changes in their building methodology,” Andrew said. “We’re trying to educate and future-proof them, so that when these changes come, it’s not a massive shock to the system.”

But regulation isn’t the only force driving change.

Today’s homeowners, particularly second and third home buyers, are more informed than ever. They’re asking for healthier and more energy-efficient homes that are comfortable to live in, rather than simply meeting minimum standards.
